About Me

1976

A Canadian living in Dublin, I've also lived, worked, and taught in Halifax, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Tokyo.

I was born in 1970 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and grew up in the beautiful Annapolis Valley.

In 1991 I graduated from Dalhousie University with a BA in English and spent the next ten years at a number of pursuits: living in a cabin in Nova Scotia, slopping coffee in Vancouver, getting qualified as a teacher in Montreal (specialising in English as a second language), teaching business English in Toronto, and writing plays – my second effort won a student playwriting contest.

In 2001 I went to Tokyo for what was supposed to be one year of teaching and stayed for four.  During my second year in Japan I met an Irish journalist who was in town for the 2002 Soccer World Cup.

Three years later we got married and moved to Ireland where I started writing prose.  In November, 2011, I completed a Master's of Philosophy in Creative Writing from Trinity College Dublin.

I've been short-listed for the Fish Short Story Prize (2008) and the Fish Short Memoir Prize (2012) and have published an adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream for younger ESL learners (2010, Black Cat Publishing, Genoa).  I now teach part-time at Dublin Business School.  I have recently finished my first novel and am working on a second.
